Big Spender

The bill for Ottawa, read line by line.

BIGSPENDER.CA

Your table is ready. The bill is addressed to you.

Ministers, MPs and senior officials must publish what they spend on travel, hospitality and perks. Almost nobody reads the filings. We read every line: who flew where, who ate what, what it cost, and who paid.

Tab so far

$68,059,597

Sixteen receipts so far, from a $543 Uber ride to the National Research Council’s $45.8-million office overhaul. Where one trip shows up on more than one filing (the Prime Minister’s in-flight catering), it is counted once. Every receipt links to the filing it came from.

How the bill gets itemized

  1. 01

    We read the filings

Proactive disclosure means they must post their own expense, travel and hospitality reports. We pull the new ones every day and read them line by line.

  2. 02

    We add it up

One line is a rounding error. A year of lines is a pattern. We total it, check it against the rules, and put a name and a date on every charge.

  3. 03

    You get the receipt

A short story, a receipt, and a link to the disclosure it came from. Every receipt links to the disclosure it came from, so you can check our arithmetic.
